Tradition tells us that when Muhammad arrived in Quba a man rushed into Medina. He announced the arrival of the Prophet. Al-Husayn was working atop a palm tree when he heard the news. Overjoyed he shouted “Allahu Akbar”.
His aunt questioned his enthusiasm. Al-Husayn declared that Muhammad was the brother of Moses. He followed the same religion. Without hesitation Al-Husayn went to meet Muhammad.
He found a crowd gathered around him. The first words Al-Husayn heard Muhammad say were about spreading peace sharing food and praying at night. Al-Husayn scrutinized Muhammad’s face. He was convinced it was not the face of an imposter.
Al-Husayn declared his faith. He proclaimed that there is no god but God and Muhammad is his messenger. Muhammad asked his name. “Al-Husayn ibn Salam” he replied. The Prophet said “Instead it is now Abdullah ibn Salam”.
Abdullah ibn Salam embraced his new identity. He became a devoted companion of Muhammad. Islamic texts say that the Quran implicitly mentions Abdullah ibn Salam. He is described as a witness from the Children of Israel who testified to the truth of the Quran.
Abdullah ibn Salam was even promised Paradise while still alive. Muhammad pointed him out to his companions saying “Do you want to see a man walking on Earth and in Paradise?”
