Time stood still beneath the shade of ancient trees. The Mushallah Baitul Solihin stood before us a testament to faith and resilience.

This unassuming mosque in Batam holds a unique place in the city’s history. It wasn’t grand or opulent. It was simple. Yet it served as a vital spiritual hub for many. For decades its walls have echoed with prayers.

Built between 1972 and 1975 the Mushallah Baitul Solihin witnessed Batam’s transformation. From a sparsely populated island to a bustling metropolis. It stood as a silent observer of this incredible growth. The mosque’s location on a hill offered stunning views. One could see the vast expanse of the ocean. Ships sailed past. Even the towering buildings of neighboring Singapore were visible in the distance.

Initially under the authority of Pertamina under Ibnu Sutowo’s leadership the Mushallah Baitul Solihin later transitioned to Otorita Batam now BP Batam. This peaceful place welcomed significant figures. Ministers from President Soeharto’s era held Friday prayers here in 1997. Habibie Faisal Tanjung and Susilo Sudarman also frequented the Mushallah Baitul Solihin. Even renowned Indonesian qari Muammar ZA once served as both khatib and imam here.

The Mushallah Baitul Solihin served as more than a place of worship. It became a symbol of community. People gathered in its tranquil courtyard. They shared stories and strengthened their bonds. The mosque’s grounds once housed a troop of monkeys that playfully leaped among the branches.

Today the Mushallah Baitul Solihin stands as a reminder of Batam’s past. It is a living testament to the faith and resilience of its people. It is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place of peace and community. A place where stories are shared and faith is renewed. A silent sentinel to the ever-changing landscape of Batam.
