Step into the captivating world of the Museum of Us. Right here in Balboa Park San Diego’s Museum of Us stands tall. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a journey through time a testament to humanity’s enduring spirit.
The Museum of Us began its life in 1915. It started as part of the Panama-California Exposition. The exposition’s central exhibit “The Story of Man through the Ages” showcased artifacts from across the globe. Archaeologist Dr Edgar Lee Hewett led the charge. He organized expeditions to the American Southwest and Guatemala. He even gathered materials from anthropologist Aleš Hrdlička of the Smithsonian Institution. These expeditions brought back pre-Columbian pottery Mayan artifacts and specimens from Africa Siberia Alaska and Southeast Asia. Even osteological remains and trepanated crania from Peru were added to this growing collection.
A group of San Diego citizens led by George Marston saw the potential. They formed the San Diego Museum Association. Their goal was to preserve this incredible collection. They successfully transformed it into a permanent museum. Dr Hewett became its first director. The collection grew. Notable additions included the Jessop Weapons Collection and rare Amarna artifacts. These were donated by Ellen Browning Scripps and the Egypt Exploration Society.
The museum’s name changed a few times over the years. It was briefly called the Palace of Science. Then it became the San Diego Museum of Man. Finally in 2020 it embraced a more inclusive name: the Museum of Us. This reflected its commitment to showcasing the diverse human experience. The museum even served as a hospital during World War II. Its exhibits and collections were temporarily stored. After the war the museum’s focus shifted to the people of the Western Americas. This led to significant growth in its collections. Today the Museum of Us boasts nearly two million objects.
The Museum of Us is housed in the California Quadrangle. This is a group of stunning buildings from the 1915 Exposition. The California Building and its iconic California Tower are National Register of Historic Places landmarks. The tower’s carillon and chimes can be heard throughout Balboa Park. The Gill Administration Building houses administrative offices and an auditorium. It’s the first building ever erected in Balboa Park. Evernham Hall and Saint Francis Chapel complete the quadrangle.
The Museum of Us’s collections are incredible. They focus on pre-Columbian history of the Americas. There are exhibits on Native American cultures of Southern California and Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya. The museum also holds a significant collection of Ancient Egyptian antiquities. These include burial masks figurines and seven painted wooden coffins. One is a Ptolemaic child’s coffin a rare find. The museum houses over 100000 ethnographic items 300000 archaeological items and 25000 photographic images.
The California Building and its tower even starred in Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. They were used as the fictitious Xanadu estate. The Museum of Us is more than just a museum.
