These silent stones whisper stories. They stand before you at the State Museum of Urban Sculpture. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a living archive of St Petersburg’s soul. Established on July 28 1932 it’s the only Russian museum dedicated to urban monumental art.

The museum’s heart beats in several places. The main exposition focuses on the tombs and necropolis of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Imagine wandering through the Lazarevskoe cemetery. Now a museum since 1923 it’s an open-air gallery of over 1000 tombstones. They date from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. These aren’t just stones. They bear witness to the lives of Peter the Great’s contemporaries. Prominent figures from Russian history science and culture rest here. Members of the most prestigious noble families are also represented.

Another section is the Necropolis of Masters of Arts. Previously the Tikhvin cemetery it holds about 200 tombstones. Here lie writers musicians and artists from the 19th century. Actors and theatre artists from the 19th and 20th centuries are also buried there.

The Annunciation Church is another essential part of the museum. Built between 1717 and 1724 by architects D Trezzini and T Swertfeger it’s the oldest stone church in St Petersburg. It’s a stunning example of Petrine Baroque architecture. The church’s graves are priceless historical and artistic treasures from the 18th and 19th centuries. They even call it the first Russian Pantheon. Members of the royal family and prominent governmental figures from the 18th century are buried here including the legendary A V Suvorov.

But the State Museum of Urban Sculpture is more than just graves. It actively participates in shaping St Petersburg’s cityscape. Since 1947 it’s been involved in building new monuments. It takes part in art councils and competition juries. The museum organizes exhibitions and discussions of monument projects. Since late 1948 it has even received competition projects for all monuments planned for installation in Leningrad.

The museum also houses a new showroom. This showcases models of city monuments. They illustrate the development of Russian and Soviet monumental sculpture. The models are crafted from the same materials as the originals bronze and granite. This includes iconic monuments like the obelisk to the Hero City of Leningrad. You can see models of the Horse Tamers on Anichkov Bridge. The monument to Catherine II the monument to A S Pushkin and many more. These models bring the city’s history to life in miniature.

The State Museum of Urban Sculpture. It’s not just a place to visit. It’s a journey through time a tangible link to St Petersburg’s past present and future. A testament to the enduring power of art and memory.
