A vibrant splash of color greets you. Welcome to the Museum of Latin American Art. This isn’t just a museum it’s a journey. A journey through time and artistry.

The Museum of Latin American Art or MOLAA opened its doors in 1996. It’s the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art. Imagine its founders’ vision. A space celebrating the rich tapestry of Latin American creativity.

MOLAA didn’t start in this impressive building. Before it became a cultural haven the site was home to the Balboa Amusement Producing Company. This was a silent film studio a giant in its time. Before Hollywood Balboa reigned supreme. It produced thousands of feet of film weekly. Can you picture the bustle the energy? The building we see today housing MOLAA’s galleries was once a roller skating rink. The Hippodrome.

After a major expansion in 2007 MOLAA more than doubled in size. A stunning 15000 square foot sculpture garden was added. Now imagine strolling through this oasis. The garden itself is a work of art. It features a water element echoing Latin American courtyard designs.

The museum’s collection is vast. It houses over 1500 works. Paintings sculptures drawings photographs. The list goes on. MOLAA showcases Latin American masters like Tamayo Matta and Cruz Diez. It also presents works by contemporary artists. Each piece tells a story a history a culture.

MOLAA isn’t just about displaying art. It’s about promoting dialogue. It fosters cross-cultural understanding through exhibitions educational programs and cultural events. The museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. This connection allows MOLAA to borrow from the Smithsonian’s vast collection.

The Museum of Latin American Art isn’t just a place to visit. It’s an experience. It’s a chance to connect with a vibrant culture. To understand a rich history. To appreciate art in all its forms. So take your time explore this cultural treasure. Let the art inspire you.
