Returning to Athens in 1932, Gounaropoulos established his home and studio in Ano Ilisia. His style reflects influences from Post-Impressionism. Symbolism and Surrealism also played a role. He also had a deep fascination with ancient Greek mythology. His paintings often depict ethereal and lyrical scenes. These include still lifes and portraits. He also had a significant series of surrealistic and atmospheric nudes.
