Ever wonder how a fish market transformed into a haven for groundbreaking art? That’s the story of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.
Right here at 1485 Delgany Street stands the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. It is more than just a building. It’s a testament to Denver’s evolving cultural landscape.
Founded in 1996 by Sue Cannon and a group of passionate volunteers, MCA Denver emerged as the city’s first dedicated space for contemporary art. For seven formative years, the museum occupied a renovated fish market in Sakura Square. Imagine the juxtaposition: fresh seafood replaced by thought-provoking installations.
In 2003, a pivotal moment arrived. Mark Falcone and Ellen Bruss, MCA Denver trustees, donated land in the Central Platte Valley. This act of generosity paved the way for a permanent home.
Fast forward to October 2007. MCA Denver unveiled its new facility. Designed by architect Sir David Adjaye, the 27000-square-foot building blurred the lines between city and museum. Adjaye’s vision minimized boundaries. The building became his first U.S. museum commission. In 2019, the building was named the Fries Building, thanks to a generous donation.
Adam Lerner’s appointment as director in 2009 marked another turning point. Lerner merged his previous institution, The Lab at Belmar, with MCA Denver. This merger brought the iconic dog logo and the renowned Mixed Taste program to the museum. Lerner fostered a culture of creative risk-taking.
Nora Burnett Abrams took the reins as the Mark G. Falcone Director in August 2019. As curator since 2010, Abrams had already shaped the museum’s curatorial vision. She continues to champion unconventional approaches to art.
MCA Denver expanded its reach in April 2022 with the opening of MCA Denver at the Holiday Theater. This performance space on Denver’s Northside allows innovative programming. It also strengthens community partnerships.
Unlike many museums, MCA Denver has no permanent collection. Instead, exhibitions rotate every two to four months. This ensures a constant stream of fresh perspectives.
