In 1964, a bold idea took root in Montreal: a museum dedicated solely to contemporary art. This idea blossomed into the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the first of its kind in Canada. The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal began its journey in Place Ville-Marie. It then briefly resided in the Château Dufresne. It later found a home in the International Fine Arts Exhibition building from Expo 67. Finally, in 1992, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal moved to its current location at Place des Arts. This vibrant hub became part of Canada’s largest cultural complex, a place where visual and performing arts intertwine. The grand opening drew nearly 20,000 visitors in just two days. As part of the move, artist Geneviève Cadieux created “La Voie lactée,” a large-scale photograph of lips, now a permanent fixture on the museum’s roof. The Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal boasts a collection of over 7,000 works. These pieces represent significant trends in contemporary art. The collection showcases artists from Quebec, Canada, and around the world, including a notable collection by Montreal artist Betty Goodwin. Currently, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is undergoing a transformation. It has temporarily returned to Place Ville-Marie while renovations are underway. The redesigned museum will feature expanded exhibition spaces and public areas, further solidifying its role as a vital contemporary art institution.
