The museum’s history is as rich as its collection. Initially housed in a building designed by Basil Champneys. It moved to its current location in 1982 a purpose-built gallery. This was done to better accommodate its growing collection. The museum was established in 1884 following a shift in the University’s Classics curriculum. The inclusion of Art and Archaeology meant that plaster casts were used as educational tools. Many early casts were donated from the Fitzwilliam Museum.
