But the real star here the Museum of Classical Archaeology itself. This amazing collection boasts over 450 plaster casts. They are replicas of famous Greek and Roman sculptures. Imagine the awe-inspiring size of Amelung’s Athena. A recreation of the colossal statue that once graced the Parthenon. Or the vibrant Peplos Kore. A painted plaster cast highlighting the original statue’s lost colors. This incredible display challenges the misconception of purely white ancient sculptures. The museum also houses a remarkable collection of sherds and epigraphic squeezes. Thousands more casts remain in the museum’s archives unseen by the public.

The museum’s history is as rich as its collection. Initially housed in a building designed by Basil Champneys. It moved to its current location in 1982 a purpose-built gallery. This was done to better accommodate its growing collection. The museum was established in 1884 following a shift in the University’s Classics curriculum. The inclusion of Art and Archaeology meant that plaster casts were used as educational tools. Many early casts were donated from the Fitzwilliam Museum.
