Marvelous isn’t it? The Africa Center. This stunning building before us wasn’t always the vibrant cultural hub it is today. Once known as the Museum for African Art it has a rich history. Founded in 1984 its initial mission was to increase public understanding of African art and culture.
The Museum for African Art had humble beginnings. It started in a pair of converted townhouses on the Upper East Side. Under the visionary leadership of Susan Mullin Vogel it quickly gained recognition. Vogel curated groundbreaking exhibitions that challenged Western perceptions of African art. Exhibitions like Art/Artifact and Exhibition-ism redefined how African art was presented.
In 1993 the museum moved to a larger space in SoHo. Architect Maya Lin designed the new building. Her design was a flowing sequence of galleries a true masterpiece. Later the museum relocated again this time to Long Island City in Queens. This was a temporary home while the museum planned its grand move to a permanent location. This move proved to be challenging. Funding issues caused delays. The initial goal of a Fifth Avenue museum location proved unsustainable. The board made the bold decision to change the scope of the project completely.
A new vision emerged. The institution would become The Africa Center. Its mission expanded to become a comprehensive space for cultural exchange policy discussions and business initiatives related to Africa and its diaspora. In 2015 the Africa Center hired Michelle D Gavin as managing director. However she left in 2016. In 2010 the outer shell of the new building was completed. The interior build-out and full opening faced further delays. Fundraising remained a struggle. Yet the ambition persisted.
The Africa Center’s current location on Fifth Avenue is a testament to perseverance. It’s a remarkable building. It represents the dynamism and diversity of Africa and its diaspora. The building houses a theater an education center a library classrooms and event space. It is a beacon of cultural exchange fostering connections between Africa and the world. This magnificent building is more than just a museum. It is a living testament to the power of art and culture to transcend boundaries to build bridges and to shape a better future. A $7 million grant in 2023 from the City helped complete the building’s interior spaces.
The Africa Center stands as a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. It is a place where art and culture meet. A place of learning discussion and celebration.
