Miniature soldiers stand frozen mid-battle within Museu da Guerra Colonial. It is not just a museum. It is a portal. This portal transports you back to a tumultuous period in Portuguese history. Welcome to the Museu da Guerra Colonial. This museum preserves military history. It is a place of reflection.

The Museu Militar do Porto opened its doors on March 21 1980. President Ramalho Eanes inaugurated it. But the idea for a military museum began much earlier. In the late 19th century Joaquim Vitorino Ribeiro collected military artifacts. His collection formed the base for an exposition in 1920. The City Council showed interest in a permanent museum.

Initially the Castle of São João da Foz was considered in 1957. The high costs led to abandonment of the project. In 1977 a new location was found. It was a building on Rua do Heroísmo. The former secret police PIDE/DGS used this building. The Revolutionary Council established the Museu Militar do Porto here.

The Museu da Guerra Colonial’s collection comes from two sources. There are particular offers and obsolete Army material. These items have historical relevance.

One main attraction is the miniature figure collection. It shows the evolution of soldiers. This evolution starts from pre-history to the present day. Around 16000 miniatures are on display. They come from famous European producers like Britains and CBG Mignot.

A room is dedicated to the Revolution of January 31 1891. This event marked the first attempt to establish a Republic in Portugal.

Artillery pieces and combat vehicles are on display. These date from the 15th to the 20th centuries. See them in the Park of Heavy Weapons and the Pavilion of Weapons. Cutting weapons and firearms show their evolution.

The Museu da Guerra Colonial also has a thematic library. It is available to the public. The building itself has its own story. It was built in the late 19th century for D. Maria Coimbra. It is a characteristic construction of that period. Spanish nuns stayed here during the Spanish Civil War. In 1948 the Portuguese State bought the building. They paid 450000 escudos to install the secret police.

The Museu da Guerra Colonial stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of Portugal’s past. It encourages reflection on conflict and peace. Take a moment to explore its exhibits. Consider the stories they tell. These stories go beyond dates and battles. They speak of people. They speak of a nation. The museum serves as a space for learning. It is a space for remembrance. It ensures that the lessons of the past are never forgotten.
