Is this a treasure chest? The Museo Popoli e Culture might seem so at first glance. It’s a place where the echoes of distant drums mingle with the whispers of ancient rituals. The Museo Popoli e Culture was born in 1910 with the grand name “Indo-Chinese Ethnographic Museum”. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of human connection across cultures. This magnificent museum we’re standing in front of houses a captivating collection of artifacts from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America. Imagine the journeys these objects have taken, sailing across oceans and continents to find their home here in Milan! Originally, the collection started in 1852 thanks to Father Carlo Salerio who traveled to Papua New Guinea. Sadly, World War II left its mark on the museum. Many pieces were destroyed during air raids in 1943, a poignant reminder of the fragility of our cultural heritage. But the Museo Popoli e Culture persevered. Over the decades, it has evolved, embracing new ways to showcase these incredible treasures. Today, interactive exhibits breathe life into ancient philosophies, allowing you to practically experience the spirit of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism. The Museo Popoli e Culture is more than just a museum. It’s a journey of discovery, a celebration of diversity, and a reminder that we are all connected by the threads of our shared human story.
