Marvelous isn’t it? This stunning building before us is the Museo Municipal de Arte en Vidrio in Alcorcón. It’s more commonly known as the MAVA. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a treasure trove of contemporary glass art.

The MAVA resides within the majestic Castillo Grande de San José de Valderas. This grand castle was built in 1917. The Marqueses de Valderas commissioned its construction. The architect was Luis Sainz de los Terreros. He was known for his historicist style. The castle originally included three buildings. The main residence is now the museum. There was also a chapel and a building for stables and servants’ quarters. The servants’ quarters no longer exist.

The museum’s collection is truly remarkable. It boasts over 160 pieces. These works were created by renowned national and international glass artists. The collection showcases a wide range of techniques. There’s glass casting molding blowing and more. The collection beautifully represents the contemporary art movement in glass. A significant portion of the collection is thanks to Takako Sano. She generously donated over 60 pieces from her personal collection. The collection also includes works from the Studio Glass Movement. This significant artistic movement began in the United States in the 1960s. It revolutionized the way artists used glass.

Javier Gómez deserves immense credit. He was the driving force behind the creation of the MAVA. He is an Abulense sculptor. His passion and vision brought this incredible collection together. He convinced the Alcorcón City Council. He also persuaded artists and private collectors to contribute.

The MAVA opened in 1997. It’s more than just a display of art. It actively promotes glass art through temporary exhibitions. They also offer workshops guided tours and educational programs. The MAVA continues to grow. It actively seeks to become a leading international center for contemporary glass art.

Step inside and experience the beauty and artistry of glass. Witness the innovative techniques and sheer talent on display. The Museo Municipal de Arte en Vidrio awaits your exploration. It is a testament to human creativity and the enduring allure of glass.
