The year is 1783. Imagine a grand house on this very spot, the talk of Córdoba. The newly appointed Governor Intendente, Rafael de Sobremonte, has just moved in. The Museo Histórico Provincial Marqués de Sobremonte, as we know it today, started its life much earlier. Constructed by the Spanish merchant José Rodríguez, it took a lengthy 20 years to build, finally completing in 1752. This makes it the oldest surviving house in Córdoba, a rare and fascinating example of 18th-century civil construction. The Museo Histórico Provincial Marqués de Sobremonte is much more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a portal to colonial life. The building’s design, with its five patios, 26 rooms, and a chapel, paints a vivid picture of the social and family life of that era. It was a time when homes seamlessly blended domestic life with business, as wealthy families often ran shops or workshops from their properties.
