Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea

A captured moment in time – that is what you find at the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea. Right here in the Villa Ghirlanda, the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea opened its doors in 2004. It quickly became Italy’s first public museum solely dedicated to contemporary photography and technology-driven images. The Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea is a collaboration between the Province of Milan, the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo, the Lombardy Region, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. This museum, established in 2005, wasn’t a new idea. The Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea was conceived in 1996 as part of a larger project recognizing the architectural and environmental assets of the Province of Milan. The museum’s collection is housed in the south wing of Villa Ghirlanda and boasts an impressive two million images donated across 28 collections. The accompanying library is overflowing with 20,000 volumes, making the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea a haven for photography enthusiasts. The Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea doesn’t just store history. It promotes exploration, study, and understanding of photography’s evolution through the lens of technological change.
