Ever wondered where Geneva’s artistic soul resides? It lives within the walls of the Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire.

The Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire, also known as MAH, stands as Geneva’s largest art museum. Its story began long before its doors opened in 1910. The museum’s roots trace back to 1826 with the Musèe des Beaux-Arts. This earlier museum found its home in what is now the Musèe Rath.

Fast forward to the late 19th century. Geneva’s art collections grew thanks to generous donations. Space became a pressing issue. In 1897, the Sociètè Auxiliaire du Musèe de Genève was founded. Its mission was clear. Create a new museum.

The city launched an architecture competition in 1900. Marc Camoletti won. He designed the building we see today. Construction of the Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire took place from 1903 to 1910. Banker Charles Galland’s bequest made it all possible.

Look at the building’s facade. Sculptures by Paul Amlehn adorn it. They represent painting, sculpture, drawing and architecture. The upper frieze displays names of Genevan artists.

Inside the Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire, a world of art awaits. The fine art section showcases paintings from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. You will find Italian, Dutch, French, English, Genevan, and Swiss works. Konrad Witz’s The Miraculous Draught of Fishes is a highlight. Masterpieces by Rembrandt, Cézanne, Modigliani, and Rodin also grace the walls. The museum boasts an impressive collection of works by Jean-Étienne Liotard.

The applied art section features Byzantine art, icons, and medieval weapons. Silverware, musical instruments, and textiles are also on display. Step into furnished rooms from the Lower Castle Zizers.

Don’t miss the archaeology section. It holds artifacts from European prehistory and ancient Egypt. A 9th-century BC mummy resides here. Discover treasures from ancient Greece and Rome. A numismatic cabinet awaits coin enthusiasts.

The Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire heads the Musées d’Art et d’Histoire. This association includes several other museums. The Cabinet des Estampes holds graphics. The Musèe Ariana showcases porcelain. The Maison Tavel explores Geneva’s history. A restoration studio and an art library complete the picture.

Jean Nouvel described the Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire as the city’s most beautiful building in the Beaux-Arts style.

Take your time as you explore the Musèe d’Art et d’Histoire. With over 7,000 exhibits, there’s much to discover. The permanent collections are free. Temporary exhibitions may have a fee. This museum invites you to delve into art and history. Enjoy the journey through time and culture.
