From Russia with love, then transformed into a palace of art. That’s the story of the Musée des Beaux Arts in Nice. We stand before a stunning example of 19th-century neo-classical architecture, once the Villa Kotschoubey-Thomson. The Musée des Beaux Arts opened its doors in this very villa in 1928. Its journey began long before that, with the desire of Nice’s residents for a dedicated space to celebrate art. The museum’s first home in 1875 was a humble apartment on Rue Saint-François-de-Paule. It was a small start, housing a collection of paintings, statues, antiquities, and historical memorabilia. The collection came from various sources including restricted-access establishments and the municipal library. The museum even briefly resided in a neoclassical building known as the Portallier gallery before finding a more permanent home on Avenue Notre-Dame in 1901. Here, the Musée des Beaux Arts truly blossomed, thanks to its innovative management and rich programming. The building’s layout was perfect for displaying works, with dedicated spaces for sculptures, engravings, and paintings from different schools and periods. The museum became a beacon of Nice’s artistic spirit, featuring works by local and international artists. Rooms within the museum were even named after generous donors, a testament to the community’s investment in art. Finally, in 1925, the dream of a grand art palace became reality. The city acquired the Villa Kotschoubey-Thomson, built originally by the wife of a private advisor to Tsar Alexander II. The villa then passed into the hands of an American entomologist and his wife, who commissioned renovations giving the building its current Italian neo-renaissance flair. The Musée des Beaux Arts, also known as the Palais des Arts Jules Chéret, was born in this villa. It boasts a collection that spans from the 16th to the 20th century, encompassing paintings and sculptures. Inside, you’ll find works by renowned artists including Rodin, Picasso, and of course, Jules Chéret, for whom the museum’s alternate name pays tribute. The Musée des Beaux Arts stands as a symbol of Nice’s artistic journey and its transformation into a prominent cultural destination.
