Whispers of artistry and nature intertwine here at the Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie. It stands as a testament to the vision of Abderrazzak Bencha\u00e2bane. Founded in 2011, it was the first permanent exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art in Marrakech.

The Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie is not just a museum. It is a harmonious blend of art and nature. Located at the entrance to the Palmeraie in Douar Tounsi, the museum invites visitors to explore the interplay between contemporary art and the natural world.

Imagine this old agricultural buildings transformed into galleries. These buildings now host a collection of works by about forty Moroccan artists. The Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie also hosts temporary exhibitions. This ensures a constantly evolving artistic landscape.

But the art extends beyond the walls. The Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie has two hectares of parkland divided into themed gardens. There is a dry garden and a water garden. You can find a kitchen garden and an orchard. Fragrant rose bushes and an Andalusian garden add to the sensory experience. These gardens evoke the past and present nature of the Palmeraie.

Abderrazzak Bencha\u00e2bane is the heart and soul of this place. He is known as a perfumer, gardener, ethnobotanist, professor, writer, and photographer. He also founded a garden art festival. Bencha\u00e2bane even created museums and magazines and is a collector. His passion for the arts and sciences converge here.

Bencha\u00e2bane breathed new life into the Jardin Majorelle from 1998 for ten years. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berg\u00e9 entrusted him with restoring its magic. He revived the three-hectare estate in the original spirit of Jacques Majorelle. Saint Laurent asked him to create a perfume for the garden shop and his first creation was the Jardin Majorelle eau de toilette.

Note that the first garden in Marrakech was planted nearly 1000 years ago during the city’s founding. Shortly after that, the Palmeraie and the huge Agdal garden gave Marrakech the title of garden city.

The gardens at the Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie reflect this rich history. The museum was once a farm. It is now divided into three distinct spaces.

The first is a rectangular garden along a pool. It reflects the symmetry of Moroccan and Andalusian gardens. This pool is practical, aesthetic, and symbolic. It mirrors paradise and the duality of water and earth. It evokes the Generalife Garden in Granada’s Alhambra and Seville’s Alcazar. Fragrant plants like orange blossoms and roses line the pool.

The second garden is freer. A path winds through it with modern sculptures and decorated pavilions.

The third part is a cactus garden hidden behind high walls. Cacti have reigned supreme here for fifty years.

Four gardeners tend to this hectare. There are forty species of cacti, four palm species, and four bamboo species. Citrus fruits, succulents, aquatic plants, and various flowers complete the idyllic picture. Some plants were brought back from Africa and South America.

In Islam, the garden is an expression of paradise. Water plays a vital role. This garden exemplifies the ecological use of water. Annual rainfall is enough to irrigate the plants. It also serves as an educational garden. Visitors can learn about water management and the role of pollinators.

Inside the Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie, you will find contemporary art. The collection includes paintings, photographs, sculptures, calligraphy, and installations. Artists from Morocco, Iraq, Syria, and Japan are represented. You will also find works by Farid Belkahia. His museum is less than ten minutes away.

There is also a miniature perfume museum. It showcases plants and essential oils associated with Morocco. You can discover how a perfume is created through distillation.

The Mus\u00e9e de la Palmeraie is located in the Palmeraie district. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.
