What secrets lie behind the elegant facade of the Max-Weber-Haus? Nestled across the Neckar River, with the Heidelberg Castle as its backdrop, the Max-Weber-Haus whispers tales of intellectual giants and spirited gatherings. This stately mansion, originally known as “Haus Fallenstein”, was built in 1846. Throughout the years, it has housed a procession of brilliant minds, including historian Georg Gottfried Gervinus and legal scholar Levin Goldschmidt. But it was in 1910, with the arrival of economist and sociologist Max Weber and his wife Marianne, that the house truly came alive. They resided on the first floor, the one with the impressive balcony, a space that would soon witness the birth of legendary “jours”, a gathering of academic minds. Imagine a Sunday afternoon, sunlight dappling through the leaves of the surrounding park. Inside the Max-Weber-Haus, a captivating discussion unfolds. The air vibrates with the energy of brilliant minds like Emil Lask, Gustav Radbruch and Karl Jaspers, all drawn into the Webers’ orbit. These gatherings, initially called “Academic Society”, weren’t just for established professors. Young scholars and intellectuals were welcomed into the fold, creating a melting pot of ideas and perspectives. The very walls of the Max-Weber-Haus absorbed their lively debates, becoming silent witnesses to the intellectual ferment of the time. In 1919, Max Weber moved to Munich, where he sadly passed away the following year. Marianne returned to Heidelberg and, in a twist of fate, managed to move back into their former residence. Here, she would continue the tradition of the “jours”, now known as “Geister-Tee” or “Spirits’ Tea”. Picture Marianne, an influential figure in the women’s movement, presiding over these vibrant gatherings. Accompanied by her old friends, including the renowned Alfred Weber, she nurtured the exchange of ideas, ensuring that the Max-Weber-Haus remained a beacon of intellectual discourse. Even during the dark years of Nazi rule, the core group continued to meet, finding solace and intellectual nourishment within the walls of the Max-Weber-Haus. It’s no coincidence that many members of this circle played a pivotal role in the reopening of Heidelberg University in 1945. Today, the Max-Weber-Haus stands as a testament to a bygone era of intellectual brilliance. It’s a place where the echoes of past debates linger, inviting us to reflect on the enduring power of ideas. The Max-Weber-Haus became home to the International Study Centre, ensuring its legacy as a place of learning and exchange continues.
