But the Municipality’s roots stretch back to the early 1920s. That’s when the first administrative bodies began to take shape. Imagine Muscat in its nascent stages, grappling with the challenges of cleanliness, market organization, and building regulations. Muscat Municipality was there, laying the foundation for the modern city we see today. In 1938, a dedicated department emerged. It was tasked with regulating the streets and houses of Muscat and Muttrah. This was a pivotal step towards organized urban development. Fast forward to 2015, Royal Decree No. 38/2015 solidified Muscat Municipality’s position. It granted the municipality legal personality, financial independence, and administrative autonomy. This decree empowered the Municipality to oversee six governorates. Within the Muscat Governorate, five general directorates are further divided into five administrative regions. They vary in area, population composition, and urban development, reflecting the diverse tapestry of Muscat. Muscat Municipality’s influence extends beyond Oman’s borders. It actively participates in numerous Arab, regional, and international organizations. These include prestigious bodies like the Arab Towns Organization and the Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities. Through these affiliations, Muscat Municipality strengthens its role on a global stage. It contributes to the exchange of knowledge and best practices in urban development. The Municipality has strived to improve Muscat’s livability. It established a contact center with the easy-to-remember number, 1111. This reflects the Municipality’s commitment to citizen engagement and easy access to information. It’s more than just a number. It’s a symbol of a city striving to make life easier and more convenient for its residents.
