Step into the spotlight. The Murray Theater. This isn’t just any building. It’s a time capsule a testament to Murray’s rich history.
Built in 1938 by Tony Duvall and Joseph L Lawrence this Art Moderne masterpiece first opened its doors on October 28th 1938. Imagine the excitement the crowds. They flocked to see “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and “Hawaiian Holiday”. Local papers boasted of its white front gleaming under fluorescent lights. The ruby-red marquee beckoned.
But the Murray Theater was more than just a pretty face. It was a first-run and second-run movie house showcasing Hollywood’s golden age. “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” graced its screen. These were two of Hollywood’s first major color films. Think of the gasps the awe. The spacious auditorium with its plush upholstered chairs ensured an unobstructed view for every patron.
Over the years the Murray Theater underwent several transformations. Art M Jolley purchased it in 1964. He oversaw a $15000 modernization. The theater then changed hands again. In 1992 the stage was expanded to accommodate live performances. Hypnotist shows even took place.
Then a sudden closure in 1999. The Murray Theater was up for auction. A new chapter began in 2001 when the Murray Unity Spiritual Center acquired it. The interior was remodeled to include a bookstore a Sunday school and a coffee shop. The auditorium became a sanctuary.
After the Unity Center’s departure in 2004 the theater was once again transformed. It became a live entertainment and dancing venue. A pizza restaurant even opened next door. It was renamed the Murray Super Theater hosting concerts wrestling matches and private parties. The Great Recession unfortunately led to its closure.
But the story of the Murray Theater doesn’t end there. In 2015 Murray City purchased the building. Significant renovations are underway. It will once again become a vibrant film and performance venue. A phoenix rising from the ashes a beacon for the arts.
The Murray Theater is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of resilience of community spirit. It’s a place where memories are made and where stories continue to unfold. Step inside and let the magic begin.
