A towering red brick structure, it dominates the landscape of Trinity University and has become a treasured beacon of San Antonio. This is Murchison Tower. Built in 1964, it was a gift from Mr. Arch Underwood, a longtime friend of T. Frank Murchison, who served with him as a trustee of the university. The tower wasn’t just a landmark but a symbol of Trinity’s ambitious spirit and its connection to the community. Architect O’Neil Ford, a master of his era, designed Murchison Tower to be seen from almost any point in San Antonio. To ensure its longevity and strength, the brick perimeter walls were laid first, then concrete with reinforcing steel was poured between them, progressively moving upwards until the tower reached its full height of 166 feet. The tower has served an important purpose for decades. For years, incoming freshmen and graduating seniors climbed its 200 steps to shake hands with the university president. This time-honored tradition brought them closer to the university’s heart. The Carolyn Calvert Bells, cast by the John Taylor Company in London, sit atop this impressive structure, their melodic chimes adding a harmonious touch to the campus. The bells signal a sense of connection, a reminder of the vibrant community that flourishes within the university’s walls. Today, the tower stands as a visual testament to Trinity’s journey. Its architectural splendor and symbolic significance have cemented its place in the cityscape and university history, leaving a lasting impression on all who behold it.
