Christopher Porter could not have known that his home, Mooraree House, would lend its name to the entire suburb of Murarrie. The year was 1861 when Porter, an architect with a taste for sugar, built his home here. The name Murarrie itself is a journey through time, a whisper of the Yuggera language, meaning “sticky” or “muddy”, a nod to the area’s past. Murarrie wears many hats: a hub for industry, a tranquil residential haven, and a keeper of Brisbane’s history. Did you know that Murarrie was once home to a bustling meatworks, established in 1881 by the Queensland Freezing and Food Export Company? Imagine the sights and smells, the hustle and bustle of a bygone era. This industry, along with the saleyards and a brickworks, provided livelihood to the growing community. The railway line, snaking its way through in 1889, further fueled Murarrie’s growth. Today, while the echoes of these industries linger, Murarrie has embraced a new identity. Residential estates like the Mirvac’s Park Hill estate, built on the very land where livestock once stood, paint a picture of modern living. And yet, Murarrie retains its connection to the past.
