Across the bustling cityscape, Municipio 3 stands as a testament to Milan’s ever-evolving spirit. Municipio 3 wasn’t always a municipio. It began its life in the 1980s as Zone 3, an administrative division. Then, in April 2016, a shift occurred. Milan’s City Council, looking to decentralize its administration, established the new Municipio 3. This body now manages the local pulse of the area, from schools and social services to the very roads and parks that shape its character. Municipio 3 encompasses a diverse collection of districts. Casoretto, the northernmost district, offers a tranquil, residential escape. Cimiano, once an independent comune, now houses the headquarters of the Rizzoli publishing group. Città Studi, true to its name, pulses with the energy of university campuses, including the Polytechnic University and scientific departments of the University of Milan. The district also boasts prominent hospitals like the National Cancer Foundation and the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute. Lambrate, another former comune, is home to one of Milan’s major railway stations and the sprawling Parco Lambro. And let’s not forget the iconic Lambretta scooter, manufactured right here. Ortica, once a frazione of Lambrate, had its own railway station from 1896 to 1931. Porta Monforte, named after a now-demolished city gate, played a significant role in the Milan riots of 1898. The area known as Feltre showcases unique apartment blocks from the late 1950s. Finally, there’s Rottole, adding its own unique flavor to the mix. The leadership of Municipio 3 resides with the Consiglio di Municipio (Municipal Council). Its members, including the President, are directly elected by the citizens every five years. The current president, Caterina Antola, a member of the Democratic Party (PD), has held the position since June 2016. She was re-elected in October 2021, demonstrating the community’s confidence in her leadership. The council itself reflects the political landscape of Milan, with the center-left coalition holding a majority of the seats.
