Ever wonder where modern seaside charm meets ancient history? That’s Rafina-Pikermi. Today we explore this historical municipality. It is located in the center of East Attica. Rafina-Pikermi is more than just a pretty face.

This area boasts a rich past. Excavations have unearthed rectangular houses from prehistoric times. Copper milling facilities and Roman artifacts have also been found. These finds tell tales of early settlements and Roman influence.

Rafina’s story is deeply rooted in ancient Athens. Cleisthenes, a reformer, established Rafina as one of Athens’ 100 municipalities. Back then, it was called “Arafin”. It was named after Arafinas. He was one of Attica’s 100 heroes.

Now, fast forward to today. Rafina has transformed into Attica’s second-largest port. Only Piraeus is bigger. You can reach Rafina quickly from Athens via the Attiki Odos tollway.

Despite its growth, Rafina retains its authentic atmosphere. Holidaymakers and visitors are drawn to its beauty. Ferry companies increasingly favor Rafina’s harbor. The town balances density near the port with vast parks and green spaces.

Rafina offers appealing beaches. One is near the port. Another is Marikes beach in Avlaki. It sits south of the town.

Let’s journey to Pikermi. It is a small town northeast of Athens. Pikermi sits on Mount Penteli’s slopes. It occupies part of the ancient Marathon route. Pikermi has earned the nickname “Acropolis of Paleontology”. This is due to its rich paleontological finds. These were discovered shortly after the Greek state’s founding.

Excavations reveal that Pikermi was once a refuge for wild animals. Archaeological finds confirm continuous habitation. Mount Penteli provides a stunning backdrop. Hills embrace the town. A long stream cools the plain.

Pikermi also features modern wineries. Here, you can sample local wine varieties like Savatiano. The pastoral landscape includes stud farms. The architecture of houses and buildings adds elegance.

Rafina-Pikermi is committed to preserving the marine ecosystem. The Municipality is a founding member of the Blue Municipalities Network. They have implemented practices for marine preservation. These include pilot and research programs. These programs involve microplastic sampling and analysis.

Rafina played a role in refugee resettlement. After the Greek army’s defeat in Asia Minor in 1922, refugees arrived. Filippos Kabounides, a shipowner, rescued people and heirlooms. In 1923, his ships brought refugees from Tenedos to Rafina. Houses were built for them on Skouze’s estate. Small shops were also built near the square.

The church of Pantovasilissa stands as a reminder of Triglia’s Byzantine church. A statue commemorates the metropolite of Smyrni, Chrysostomos. He was killed during the destruction.

Rafina became a municipality in 1994. Andreas Kechagioglou was the first mayor. In 2011, Rafina integrated with Pikermi. Giorgios Christopoulos became mayor.

Today, Rafina’s population climbs during the summer. Events like “August’s Moon” bring musicians together. They sing songs about the moon outside St. Nikolaos church.

Robert Pires, a French footballer, is a notable resident. Kostas Karamanlis, a former Greek prime minister, also resides here. Rafina has international ties. It is twinned with Pano Lefkara in Cyprus and Tirilye in Turkey.

Rafina-Pikermi offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural richness. It is a place where ancient echoes meet modern life. As you explore, remember the layers of history beneath your feet.
