Welcome to the Municipality of Perama. It is a suburb of Piraeus. Perama stands as the southwestern boundary of the Athens urban sprawl. We are about 8 km northwest of Piraeus. Athens city center is about 14 km to the east.
The name Perama originates from the Greek word “perasma”. It means “passage”. This name reflects its historical role as a crossing point. It is a gateway to Salamis Island.
Imagine Perama in ancient times. In 480 BC, the Battle of Salamis unfolded right here. This pivotal naval battle saw the Greeks clash with the Persians. The narrow straits between Salamis and the mainland became a stage for history. Part of this stage included Perama.
Modern Perama began to take shape in the 1920s. Waves of refugees arrived seeking a fresh start. They came from various parts of Greece. Many also came from the islands. The Asia Minor events of 1922 played a key role. In 1926, families originally from Fanari settled here. They created the Fishing Refugee Settlement of Perama.
Shipyards began to emerge around 1928. These shipyards offered much-needed work. Perama gradually transformed into a city of shipbuilding. In 1928, refugees from Ikonio and Smyrna settled further east.
Until World War II, the area was different. Prosperous merchants from Piraeus had holiday homes here. They were nestled on the tree-lined Mount Egaleo. Access to the sea was unrestricted. During the war, German occupiers built a timber factory. This led to the deforestation of Mount Egaleo. Later, oil storage facilities expanded. Buildings further encroached the mountain front.
Perama became known as a city of labor. It was often seen as a socially isolated area. Some associated it with economic hardship. However, this view overlooks the creative spirit of Perama.
The ferry connection to Salamis is still vital today. Ferries depart frequently. They provide a constant link to the island. Perama is truly the passage to Salamis.
