Ever wondered what “white tower” means? Right here in front of us stands Aspropyrgos. Its name comes from the Greek words for “white” and “tower”. Aspropyrgos is a western suburb in the Athens metropolitan area. It’s a municipality in the West Attica regional unit, situated in the Thriasio Plain. Aspropyrgos is more than just a suburb. It holds a rich history. It plays a vital role in the local economy. The Municipality of Aspropyrgos had a population of 31,381 at the 2021 census. It covers an area of 101.98 square kilometers. Aspropyrgos is located about 15 kilometers northwest of Athens’ city center. You’ll find it nestled in the Thriasio Plain, just 5 kilometers northeast of Elefsina, near the Saronic Gulf coast. Mount Parnitha borders it to the north. The Aigaleo hills lie to the southeast. To the west sits the Elefsina Military Airbase. The heart of Aspropyrgos runs along Dimokratias Avenue. This translates to “Democracy” Avenue. You can reach Aspropyrgos via the A6 motorway, which connects Elefsina to Athens International Airport. The A65 motorway, linking Ano Liosia and Aspropyrgos, also provides access. Another route is through exit 4 of the A6. The industrial area is in the southeastern part of the municipality. The Aspropyrgos railway station connects to the Proastiakos train line. This line runs from Athens International Airport to Kiato in the Peloponnese region. Aspropyrgos boasts a hot semi-arid climate. This means mild winters and scorching summers. Due to its location in the Thriasio Plain, the area is prone to high temperatures. In fact, Aspropyrgos has recorded some of the highest temperatures ever seen in Greece and Continental Europe. A staggering 47.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in June 2007. Temperatures around 45 degrees Celsius were also logged in June and July 2017, and again in August 2021. The Municipality of Aspropyrgos is not just a residential area. It also has a significant industrial sector. Numerous storage warehouses, metal recycling facilities, logistics handlers, wholesalers, and small construction companies operate here. The Aspropyrgos Refinery, located south of the city near the sea, plays a major role in the Greek economy. It is the largest refinery in Greece, along with the Eleusis refinery. Its annual capacity is an impressive 135,000 barrels per day. While crucial for the economy, the refinery has also contributed to pollution challenges over the years. The refinery has depots in the south and east, with some in the west and at a dock to the southwest. From its agricultural roots as the “granary of Attica” to its industrial present, Aspropyrgos stands as a testament to change and adaptation. Its multicultural identity, with twelve different ethnicities represented, adds another layer of richness to its story. The Municipality of Aspropyrgos is a place of contrasts.
