Ever wondered where French writers sought inspiration in Lebanon? The Municipality of Amchit is calling. This seaside town is a treasure. It sits in the Byblos District. Amchit offers a glimpse into Lebanon’s rich history and culture.

Amchit is about 40 km north of Beirut. The town’s average elevation is 140 meters. Its total land area is 595 hectares. Amsheet’s population is around 25000. The majority of the inhabitants are Maronite Christians. There is also a significant Shia Muslim minority. Most Shia live in the Kfar Saleh neighborhood.

Many old churches dot the landscape of Amchit. Some believe there are more than a hundred. Some say there are old synagogues too. The churches of Saint Sophie and Saint Stephen are special. They retain their ancient vaulted porches. You can still see wall paintings there. These churches were built on the remains of a Roman temple.

The Church of Saint George is another notable site. It was built on an ancient temple. The altar has both Greek and Arabic inscriptions. The Church of Saint Nicholas also has medieval wall paintings. It was built in the 5th century.

Ernest Renan, the French writer, lived in Amchit. You can visit the house of Zakhia family. Renan stayed here for a long period in the 19th century. The tomb of his sister is at St. Marie Church in the Zakhia family Cemetery. You can visit it too.

The coastal campsite “Camping Les Colombes” is here. It is Lebanon’s only organized coastal campsite. It has a history dating back to the 1950s. Amsheet is also known for its baskets and mats. These are woven from palm leaves. Olive and citrus fruits are the main agricultural products.

Amsheet has a unique blend of culture and history. The oldest school in Lebanon of Adib Lahoud is in Amchit. The houses of Raphael Lahoud built in 1838, Gabriel Lahoud and Michel Lahoud, are also here.

Michel Suleiman, former President of the Lebanese Republic, is from Amsheet. Charbel Rouhana, Marcel Khalife, and Aline Lahoud are singers and composers. They are notable residents. Elsa Zgheib, Salwa Al Katrib, Marwan Khoury, ‘Afifa Karam, Sabah Khoury and Tony Issa are also notable residents. They are all actors or singers.
