What if I told you this modern suburb of Athens holds secrets dating back to the Neolithic period? This is Alimos a town brimming with history and coastal charm. Alimos is located on the Saronic Gulf coast. It is just 8 km south of Athens city center. Alimos was officially formed in 1968. It comprises two settlements Kalamaki and Trachones.

Alimos’ story stretches back millennia. Archaeological discoveries reveal settlements from the Neolithic period in Ano Kalamaki. In ancient times Halimous was a fishing town. It was also one of the demes of Attica. Ano Kalamaki was known as Euonymeia. It was a distinct settlement that became the Deme of Euonymos. The ruins of the amphitheater of Euonymos are still here. It had a very unusual rectangular design.

But Alimos is most famously linked to Thucydides. He was born in Halimous and often called Thucydides the Halimousian. His bust is the emblem of Alimos. The First High School of Alimos is even named Thoukydideio after him. Thucydides tells of the war between Sparta and Athens in 411 BC. He has been named the father of scientific history.

Kalamaki was once part of Brachami. It became a separate community in 1927. Later in 1968 the community of Kalamaki was abolished. Then the municipality of Alimos was founded.

Today Alimos is a bustling modern suburb. In 2021 the municipality had 43174 inhabitants. It boasts the large Marina Alimos. This marina is one of the largest in Greece. It has over 1000 berths for yachts.

Alimos also offers beautiful beaches like Little Limanaki. The town provides easy access to Athens. The Alimos metro station connects it to the city center. The coastal part of Alimos is connected by tram.

Alimos has a hot semi-arid climate. It features hot dry summers and mild wetter winters. The average daily maximum temperature in July is 32.16°C. January sees an average daily maximum of 13.18°C.

Alimos is also a sporting hub. It has two clubs in panhellenic championships. These are the N.O. Kalamaki water polo club and Trachones F.C. football club. Alimos is home to the Byzantine Sport Center. It is used by A.O. Tataula and A.S. Pera. These clubs came from Constantinople in 1973.

The commercial heart of Alimos lies along major avenues. Amfitheas Poseidonos and Alimou are vital. Thukididou Kalamakiou and Theomitoros are also important streets.

Many residents of Alimos are descendants of refugees. They came from Kalkan Turkey during the Greek genocide. Alimos is twinned with several cities.

From its Neolithic roots to its modern vibrancy Alimos offers a unique blend of history culture and coastal living. As you explore Alimos remember the echoes of the past and the energy of the present that define this captivating Greek town.
