Fifty-five meters wide. That’s how broad the Mundsburger Brücke is. Can you imagine? It’s the widest street bridge in all of Hamburg.

The Mundsburger Brücke isn’t just a bridge. It’s a connection. It links the Hohenfelde and Uhlenhorst districts. This magnificent structure spans the Mundsburger Kanal. The Papenhuder Straße branches off right here. A testament to Hamburg’s history.

Built in 1871 the Mundsburger Brücke stands tall. Who designed this marvel of engineering? Records are unclear. Johann Hermann Maack the city’s bridge-building expert may have been involved before his death in 1868. Others credit Christian Wilhelm Plath. Franz Andreas Meyer only took office in 1872. So the true architect remains a mystery.

This isn’t your typical bridge. The Mundsburger Brücke is a majestic arch bridge. Made of concrete and brickwork. Nautical ornaments adorn its abutments. A subtle nod to Hamburg’s maritime past. Its impressive width almost qualifies it as a tunnel. It was even called the “Great Bridge” during its construction. Fifteen meters short of tunnel status. Until 1975 an Alster steamer landing stage was situated on the Hohenfelde side. Now two restaurants occupy the former landing and the opposite casemates.

A cultural landmark the Mundsburger Brücke carries the number 21694. Registered as a cultural monument by the Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media. So next time you cross this wide span. Remember its fascinating history. Its enduring presence. It silently witnesses the bustling life of Hamburg. A connection between neighborhoods. A link to the past. The Mundsburger Brücke. A symbol of Hamburg’s strength and grace.
