Forgotten stories often hide in plain sight. Right here lies the Muna-Gelände in Bamberg. It is a 140-hectare area with a rich military history. The Muna-Gelände hides in eastern Bamberg. It sits between industrial areas and the Hauptsmoorwald forest. From 1945 to 2014, the US Army used this area. However its story began long before that.

Back in 1917, 43 buildings and bunkers were built here. They covered about 63 hectares. After World War I ended, the area became a “ädtischer Industriehof”. It was used for civilian purposes. From 1925 to 1927, Messerschmitt built airplanes here. They constructed 10 manufacturing halls.

During the 1930s, the Muna was revived. This happened as Germany re-armed itself. At that time, it was one of the 31 main ammunition depots in Germany. The area was expanded. About 60 more buildings and bunkers were added. Today, you can still see evidence from 1917 to 1945. There are guardhouses, administration buildings, officer quarters and barracks. Also railway facilities remain.

The Muna-Gelände might seem isolated now. However it was once part of a larger military complex. Many of these military structures still exist. These include shooting ranges, training grounds and officer housing. There were also army supply and storage buildings. The southeast of Bamberg formed a cohesive military zone. This area stretched south of Geisfelderstrasse and east of the Bamberg-Nürnberg railway line.

After the US Army left in 2014, a decision had to be made about the Muna’s future. At first glance, it seemed perfect for industrial use. It has good transport links. It is close to residential areas. It does not affect Bamberg’s skyline.

But the historic buildings of the Muna-Gelände are not suitable for industry. They were deliberately scattered and hidden in the forest. The US military did not use them much. Many buildings still have their original features. This makes the Muna-Gelände unique.

Future construction plans threaten the area’s character. These plans ignore the existing military structures. They would destroy the layout of the military complex. The connection between different buildings in southeast Bamberg would be lost. This would erase a significant part of Bamberg’s and Germany’s military history.

A small part of the area has already been designated as a nature reserve. It includes the former fire pond. Another hidden area with bunkers will also be protected. However isolating these areas would diminish their historical meaning.

Another ammunition depot in Breitengüßbach has been recognized as a monument. But in Bamberg, no part of the Muna-Gelände has been listed as a monument. The relationship between the buildings is not recognized. A historical assessment is needed. This assessment should consider the military structures. It should evaluate their military history value. It should also consider their importance to Bamberg as a military location.

The Muna-Gelände in Bamberg is a place of hidden stories. It is a reminder of past conflicts. It is a testament to the changing face of military history. Its preservation is vital for understanding Bamberg’s past.
