Mumbai CSMT has borne witness to history, both triumphant and tragic. The station itself is a grand old dame, dressed to impress in Victorian Gothic finery. She even had a different name once: Victoria Terminus, after the Queen herself. She was, after all, built in 1887 to celebrate 50 years of Victoria’s rule. Today, she stands as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, renamed to honor a local hero, the great Maratha warrior king. But the heart of CSMT has always been the people. This is one of India’s busiest stations. Imagine the throngs of travelers, the hurried goodbyes, the joy of reunions. Sadly, the station also saw a dark day on 26th November 2008. Terrorists stormed the halls, their gunfire shattering the air. The city, the nation, mourned the lives lost. But CSMT, like Mumbai itself, is resilient. She stands tall, a symbol of strength, her heart beating in rhythm with the city’s indomitable spirit. Look closely at the details, the carvings, the statues.
