Founded by a visionary with a heart for orphans, Mullen High School stands as a testament to the power of dreams and dedication. John Kernan Mullen, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, along with his wife Catherine, envisioned a haven for orphaned boys in Denver. Tragically, both John and Catherine passed away before their dream could be realized. But their daughters, honoring their parents’ legacy, persevered. They purchased the sprawling 420-acre Shirley Farm Dairy on the outskirts of Denver. In a unique agreement, the dairy continued operations, providing the boys with invaluable training in agriculture and mechanics. On April 8, 1932, Mullen High School, then known as J.K. Mullen Home for Boys, opened its doors to 17 boys and three Christian Brothers. Mullen High School’s journey has been marked by distinct eras. It began as a home and school for orphans. Then, paying boarders and day students joined the ranks. Later, it transitioned into a boys-only college preparatory high school. In 1989, Mullen High School embraced co-education, evolving into the modern institution we see today. The school’s motto, “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve,” reflects its enduring commitment to both academic excellence and community engagement. Did you know that Mullen High School boasts an impressive list of state championships in various sports? From football and soccer to swimming, basketball, and track and field, Mustangs have consistently demonstrated their athletic prowess. Mullen High School also boasts notable alumni who have achieved success in diverse fields. From NFL players like Chester Burnett, Ryan Hewitt, and Bo Scaife to MLB players like Jim Deidel and Sam Haggerty, and even a former Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, Frank McNulty, Mullen High School graduates have made their mark. The legacy of John and Catherine Mullen lives on, not just within the walls of this institution, but also in the countless lives touched by the education and values imparted here at Mullen High School.
