Craving tranquility away from Kyoto’s bustling center? Then you’re in the right place in Muko. Muko is a city in Kyoto Prefecture that offers a serene escape. Let’s explore Muko together.

Muko’s history stretches back centuries. It was once part of ancient Yamashiro Province. Emperor Kanmu even considered Muko as his capital. He moved his capital to Nagaoka-kyo in the late 8th century. Modern Muko was a large part of this new capital. However, the capital moved again to Kyoto due to unhealthy conditions.

Modern Muko was established in 1889. It officially became a city in 1972. Today, Muko balances commerce and light manufacturing.

One of Muko’s treasures is its bamboo. Muko is located in the Otokuni area of Kyoto Prefecture. This area is known for its high-quality bamboo shoots. Locals even call Otokuni “the home of bamboo”. Muko boasts the Muko Bamboo Path. This path rivals the bamboo groves of Arashiyama. The Muko Bamboo Path extends 1.8 kilometers. The path showcases Japan’s climate and agriculture.

The bamboo swaying in the wind creates a soothing atmosphere. Unique bamboo fences line the Muko Bamboo Path. These fences were introduced to combat illegal dumping. Renowned bamboo producers crafted these fences. They had worked on fences for World Heritage sites. There are about eight distinct fence designs. The fences use reclaimed materials. They source them from waste bamboo.

Farmers carefully maintain the Muko Bamboo Path. They use traditional methods passed down for generations. The cultivation process starts in early March. Farmers select parent bamboo for the next season’s harvest.

The Muko Bamboo Path hosts seasonal events. A light-up event occurs in mid-October. It is called Princess Kaguya Nights at the Bamboo Path. Thousands of bamboo lanterns illuminate the path. This creates an enchanting scene.
