Have you ever felt the earth tremble beneath your feet? Right here in Muhura you can almost sense the echoes of Rwanda’s rich history. Muhura sits nestled within the Eastern Province a region known for its breathtaking green hills. This small populated place is only a short distance from Rwamagana the regional capital and Kigali the nation’s vibrant heart.

Imagine Muhura during the 1300s. The Tutsis were migrating into this area already home to the Twa and Hutu. They settled among the rolling hills their lives interwoven with the land.

Later the kingdom of Rwanda expanded its reach. King Ruganzu Ndori a Tutsi ruler conquered central Rwanda and surrounding areas. Muhura became part of this unified state. This era wasn’t always peaceful though. The 1800s brought the arrival of colonial powers first Germany and then Belgium. This disrupted the existing social structures. The Belgians enforced a rigid ethnic classification system creating identity cards that labelled every Rwandan as Hutu Tutsi or Twa. This division sowed the seeds of future conflict.

Fast forward to 1959. Violence erupted between the Hutu and Tutsi. King Kigeri V and many Tutsis were forced into exile in neighbouring Uganda. This exile would mark a significant chapter in Rwanda’s history and dramatically impact Muhura’s community too. The ensuing years saw periodic fighting between the two groups.

Then came 1994 a year seared into Rwanda’s memory. The assassination of President Juvenal Habyarimana triggered the devastating Rwandan Genocide. The horrific events that followed left an enduring scar on the nation a period of unimaginable violence and loss affecting every corner of the country. Sadly Muhura was not spared from this tragedy.

Despite this dark chapter Rwanda has shown remarkable resilience. The country has rebuilt itself fostered reconciliation and embraced peace.
