Thousands of birds call it home. Welcome to the Mu00fchlenberger Loch and Neu00dfsand a haven for wildlife on the Elbe River.

This unique area is more than just mudflats and sandbanks. It’s a vital habitat for countless species. The Mu00fchlenberger Loch itself is a large shallow bay. It’s a crucial breeding ground for fish. Fish densities here are sometimes over a hundred times higher than in other parts of the Elbe River. The tides storms and even drifting ice have shaped this remarkable landscape. They created a rich mosaic of habitats.

Neu00dfsand the island that shares its name with the nature reserve adds another layer of complexity. It lies in the Elbe River’s main channel. It’s surrounded by busy shipping lanes and the quieter waters of the Hahnu00f6fer Nebenelbe. Believe it or not this island is shared by three German states: Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony. Hamburg however manages and protects this valuable nature reserve. A nature reserve warden even lives there sometimes.

The vegetation here is captivating. Dry grasslands reed belts and riparian forests all thrive. The hardy Sand Segge and Silver Grass grow where nutrient-poor sand isn’t reached by the tide. In the quieter southern waters you’ll find lush reeds and broadleaf and narrowleaf reed mace. Higher up on better-drained land the reeds give way to willows and even a vibrant riparian forest of poplars willows alders and ash trees. These plants provide crucial habitat.

The animal life here is just as rich. Over 150 bird species have been spotted. Around 60 regularly breed in the reserve including the majestic White-tailed Eagle and the beautiful Common Shelduck. Grey Herons Cormorans and other birds of prey are frequent visitors. In spring and autumn countless migrating birds use Neu00dfsand as a resting place. Occasionally even seals and harbour porpoises appear.

Access to the Mu00fchlenberger Loch and Neu00dfsand is restricted. Landing is permitted only at designated spots on the sandy beach. Entering most of the reserve is forbidden. This is to protect the delicate ecosystem. This is also why boats are not allowed near the reed beds and forests.

The Mu00fchlenberger Loch and Neu00dfsand are a true testament to the power of nature. The unique combination of factors creates a special place for both plants and animals. It’s a fragile ecosystem that needs our protection. So let’s leave it as beautiful and diverse as we find it today.
