Can a place barely larger than a city park hold a secret so ancient? The Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim, tucked away in Frankfurt’s eastern embrace, whispers a story of giants and forgotten mills. This smallest nature reserve in Frankfurt, a mere 3.28 hectares, is a time capsule. It preserves a relic from a bygone era: the giant horsetail. This ancient plant thrives here, in the Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim, the only place in the entire Rhine-Main area where it can be found. Imagine a time when the gentle murmur of the Enkheimer Mühlbach, the valley’s namesake, powered a mill. This short stream, a mere 180 meters long, carved a deep path through the Berger Rücken’s southern slope. The Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim was a haven of productivity. The Schelmenborn, Röhrborn, Hessenborn, and Jakobsbrunnen springs fed the millpond. After 1850, the diverted Pfingstborn joined the chorus of flowing water. The 18th-century Enkheimer Mühle, a water mill, harnessed this energy, its wheels turning with the current. The water, channeled through pipes, cascaded down a steep slope, finally merging with the Seckbacher Ried, an old arm of the Main. The Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim flourished until 1890. That year, the mill ceased its work, the pond stilled, and the valley entered a period of quiet reflection. Today, the Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim continues to evolve. The Enkheimer Mühlbach now flows into the local sewage system. Yet, the spirit of the valley persists. Plans are underway to restore the stream, to guide its waters back to the Seckbacher Ried, breathing life back into the landscape. As you stand here, at the edge of the Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim, you can trace the echoes of the past. Feuchtwiesen, Streuobstwiesen, and Halbtrockenrasen paint a tapestry of green. The giant horsetail stands tall, a silent sentinel of time. The valley, a station on the Quellenwanderweg, invites you to explore its hidden depths. It beckons you to discover the secrets held within its embrace. The Mühlbachtal von Bergen-Enkheim, a pocket of wilderness in Frankfurt’s urban heart, whispers a story of resilience and renewal. A story that continues to unfold, with every whisper of the wind, every rustle of the leaves, every drop of water that finds its way through the valley.
