Hidden among towering trees lies Mueller Park a tranquil oasis. Its history stretches back to the early 1900s. Then it wasn’t just a park. It was a vibrant hub for sports clubs. Tennis croquet bowls cricket and football teams all called this land home.
The park’s name honors Ferdinand von Mueller a prominent German-Australian botanist. He extensively documented Australian flora. He championed Australian exploration in the mid-1800s. The Subiaco Municipal Council officially named the park in his honor in July 1906.
World War I changed the landscape. In 1916 war-time sensitivities led to a name change. It became Kitchener Park. Even the roads surrounding the park were renamed. Mueller Road became Roberts Road. Ferdinand Street transformed into Winthrop Avenue.
This wasn’t the end of the story. The name eventually reverted. In 1981 after Subiaco Oval’s redevelopment Mueller Park reclaimed its original identity. The park now encompasses 4.3 hectares a green space full of history and stories.
