Perhaps this Mühlstein Stone before you holds more stories than you might think. It might seem like just a stone. But the name Mühlstein has German origins.

Mühlstein could be a nickname. It might have been for a heavy person long ago. Or perhaps it’s a toponymic surname. This means it comes from a place name. The historic village of Mühlstein in Baden-Württemberg, Germany is a possibility. The name likely comes from the Middle High German word for millstone.

The Mühlstein name appears in different contexts. There is also the Mühlenstein mountain. It stands at 607.2 meters above sea level. This makes it the third highest mountain in the Kaufunger Forest. It sits on the border of Werra-Meißner-Kreis and Landkreis Göttingen. These are regions in North Hesse and South Lower Saxony, Germany.

The Mühlenstein’s location is quite specific. It is 1.6 kilometers southeast of the Umschwang mountain pass. It is also 6.75 kilometers east of Nieste. Kleinalmerode, a western part of Witzenhausen, is about 3.25 kilometers southwest. The border between North Hesse and South Lower Saxony winds around the Mühlenstein. The mountain’s peak is just under 100 meters southeast of this border, within Hesse. This border also marks part of the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land boundary. It meets the Münden Nature Park. The Mühlenstein’s summit belongs to the Frau-Holle-Land park.

Hausfirste is the Mühlenstein’s elongated spur. Gütersberg is nearby. The Hessian-Lower Saxon border runs across it. Haferberg is the Mühlenstein’s northwestern neighbor. Bilstein is its southeastern neighbor.

The Mühlenstein is connected to Haferberg. This connection is via the Umschwang pass. It links to Bilstein via a mountain ridge. The highest point in Lower Saxony outside the Harz region sits on the Mühlenstein’s northern slope. It’s near the transition to Gütersberg.

The Mühlenstein is part of the East Hessian Highlands. It lies within the Fulda-Werra-Bergland. The Kaufunger Forest-Highland area surrounds its peak region in a horseshoe shape.

A section of the Fulda-Werra watershed runs over the Mühlenstein. Streams flowing west from the mountain. They reach the Fulda via the Nieste. Those flowing northeast head to the Werra via smaller rivers.

About 200 meters northeast of the Mühlenstein summit is the Weyland Monument. It commemorates Franz Weyland. He died in a thunderstorm during his first balloon flight on April 20, 1913. His body was found there a week later.

No roads lead directly to the Mühlenstein. But you can reach it by hiking. The Frau-Holle-Pfad trail passes about 700 meters southwest of its peak. A path branches off this trail to the summit.

So, as you stand before this Mühlstein Stone remember the layers of history. It is a stone with a surprisingly deep past. Its name links it to millstones, mountains, and even tragic balloon flights. It is a small piece of a much larger story.
