Peering through the trees, the Mückenteich appears like a hidden gem. Mückenteich lies nestled within the Mückenwald forest in Flensburg-Weiche. This area has been designated as the “Landschaftsteil Am Mückenteich”. That means “Landscape part at the Mückenteich”.

The Mückenwald itself covers about 25 hectares. It became a protected landscape area of Flensburg on January 1, 1976. The forest mainly consists of coniferous trees. The Mückenteich is a fenland pond.

Now, the name Mückenteich literally means “Mosquito Pond”. As you might guess, mosquitoes are common here. An information board warns visitors about the “buzzing plague of mosquitoes”.

At the northern edge of the Mückenwald lies the Weinberg area. It is next to Flensburg-Schäferhaus airfield. To the south, you will find the Mückenteich. Further south, at the forest’s edge, sits the local outdoor swimming pool.

Nearby streets have names that hint at the forest. Examples include Försterstieg and Hirschbogen. Försterstieg means “Forester’s Path” and Hirschbogen means “Deer Arch”.

The city forester from the Technical Operations Center manages the forest. The nearby Unesco-Projekt-Schule Weiche uses the forest for educational projects. The Mückenteich also offers locals a place for recreation.

In late 2012, the city considered creating an official off-leash area for dogs near the Mückenteich. The Mückenteich and its surrounding forest provide a vital green space within Flensburg.
