Step into the world of Muddguts a Williamsburg gem. This isn’t just any gallery. Muddguts is a story of transformation. It breathes new life into a former cafe a Williamsburg staple called Caffe Capri. Tattoo artist Mark Cross the man behind Muddguts has a knack for revitalization. He keeps the original architecture and aesthetic. His touch is subtle a respectful nod to the past. Muddguts isn’t Cross’s first Williamsburg venture. He also runs the successful Rose Tattoo Parlor. This shop boasts an impressive Instagram following nearly 34000 strong. For both Muddguts and the tattoo parlor Cross collaborated with a craftsman. They recreated the original signs. He used the original font scale and colors. Only the names were changed. Steve Powers the artist behind the signage paid homage to the old Caffe Capri. Muddguts opened its doors with an exhibition of black and white photographs. The photos were taken by a graffiti artist known only as Blake. Blake part of the BTM crew is a familiar face in Williamsburg. His tag is almost a silent urban legend. His debut exhibition at Muddguts was called Bail Window. It featured high contrast photographs of everyday street life. Blake shoots with an analog camera. He develops and prints each photo in a DIY darkroom. His work shows the intimacy between photographer and subject. The photos are remarkably affordable priced to move at just $100 each. Beyond the art Muddguts also sells t-shirts hoodies and books. One book was published specifically for the Bail Window exhibition. They’ve already sold 150 copies. An additional 50 were sent to Have A Good Time a store in Japan. Cross’s previous gallery in South Williamsburg lasted a year before being shut down for being too fun. The Bail Window exhibition’s closing reception is April 15th. The next show opens April 20th. Expect work from Lydia Fong Alicia McCarthy Todd James and Steve Powers. Tote bags and t-shirts will be available. Follow @muddguts on Instagram for updates. Muddguts is more than a gallery.
