Mt Zion AME Church

In 1921, a small group of devout African Methodists, led by Reverend Richard Frier, Sr., established the Emmanuel Mission in New York City. This mission, which would later blossom into Mt Zion AME Church, began its journey at 203 East 103rd Street. Mt Zion AME Church wasn’t always at its current location on Madison Avenue. The congregation’s initial home, Emmanuel Mission, later became Emmanuel Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. They faced struggles, but their faith persevered. A divine wind of change blew in 1941. The congregation acquired a new home at 1765 Madison Avenue. This marked a new chapter, a fresh anointing, and a name change to Mt Zion AME Church. The spirit of God was palpable as Reverend L.M. Capers led the congregation into their new sanctuary. Mt Zion AME Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to overcoming adversity, a symbol of resilience, and a vessel overflowing with the Holy Spirit. The church nurtured various clubs and boards, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Their motto “Endeavoring to keep the Unity of the Spirit in the bond of Peace” resonated deeply within their actions. Mt Zion AME Church has witnessed the hand of God at work, guiding and providing for those who follow His purpose. Many pastors have shepherded the flock at Mt Zion AME Church. Reverend Alvin J. Simmons served during a time of significant financial triumph. The church’s mortgage was paid in full in 1950. Reverend William Lee Freeman’s leadership in 1953 saw the membership swell to 772 and the birth of the Young People’s Choir. Reverend Wendell Foster followed in 1962, then Presiding Elder Reverend John G. Ragin in 1965. Later, the leadership mantle passed to Reverend Lawrence S. Odom in 1973, followed by Presiding Elder Rev. Dr. O’Neil Mackey, Sr., Reverend Carl F. Hunter, Reverend Theodore R. Kelsey, Reverend Robert A. Brown, Sr., and Reverend Jo-An L. Owings. Today, Reverend Kahlil G. James leads the congregation. Mt Zion AME Church continues its journey, embracing God’s strength, accepting the outpouring of His Spirit, and celebrating the gifts of love, mercy, and spiritual encouragement. Their diverse ministries, acts of charity, and fervent prayers reflect their commitment to serving God and their community.
