Did the mountain always feel this peaceful? Mt. Otowa, home to the breathtaking Kiyomizu-dera temple, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. The temple itself, with its iconic wooden stage jutting out over the hillside, is a marvel of Japanese architecture. Founded in 778, Kiyomizu-dera predates the very city it overlooks. Can you imagine Kyoto without its “Pure Water Temple”? The name comes from the Otowa waterfall cascading down the mountainside, its three streams believed to possess wish-granting powers.

During the Edo period, thrill-seekers would leap from the temple’s stage, a terrifying 13-meter drop, hoping their daring act would be rewarded with a fulfilled wish. Amazingly, most survived. The very expression “to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu” became synonymous with taking a leap of faith. Today, such daring feats are forbidden, but you can still test your fate at the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the god of love. Legend has it, if you can walk blindfolded between two stones placed ten meters apart, you’ll find true love.

As you stand here, taking in the panoramic views of Kyoto from Mt. Otowa, remember the countless wishes whispered into the wind, the echoes of history murmuring through the trees. Mt. Otowa and Kiyomizu-dera are more than just scenic spots. They are living testaments to Kyoto’s enduring spirit.
