Founded in 1876 Mt. Calvary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It began humbly. Services were held from house to house. Rev William Willis and a few devoted Christians started this church. Pastor Norman Dugger succeeded him. He built a small 15 by 25-foot building. The church used this building for almost 30 years.
Pastor Dugger’s failing health forced his retirement. In 1910 the church was without a pastor. Rev W H Wiggins became the third pastor. He actively participated in building a new edifice. He even got paid for his carpentry work. He resigned in 1915.
The search for a new pastor began in 1916. Deacon Archer Lipscomb Deacon Henry Young and Sister Helen Roach led the church. In October 1916 Rev A M Kent became pastor. By 1917 the church boasted 72 members. They formed a choir. That same year presented a major challenge. The US government confiscated the church’s property. They needed it to build part of Camp Lee. This is present-day Fort Lee.
Services moved to Deacon Lipscomb’s home. They also rented other buildings. A rebellion occurred around this time. Rev Kent left the church. Some members went to First Baptist City Point. The church persevered. In 1920 the church purchased its current property. Rev Chaplin suggested a building committee. A new sanctuary was built. His health failed and he left in 1921.
Rev Dr Gordon then Rev Whitfield and finally Rev W E Saunder served as pastors. They served until their deaths. In 1941 Rev Dr L W Jacobs became pastor. His tenure was the longest in the church’s history. Around 1950 Mt Calvary built its current facility. Pastor Jacobs was a highly active member of the community. He pastored five churches.
Rev Dr Joseph Dean Morrison became the tenth pastor in 1987. Under his leadership extensive renovations occurred. A fellowship hall was added. This included a kitchen bathrooms and classrooms. The main sanctuary received new windows lights carpeting and a piano. A new marquee and heated baptismal pool were installed. The parking lot was paved. A handicap ramp was added. In 2014 he established the Children’s Church. He faithfully served until his death.
Rev Vodricka Lamont Epps became pastor in 2016. He established the mission and vision statements. He developed a three five and ten-year vision plan. This plan included seven objectives. These objectives focused on discipleship community impact giving and renovations. The church also participates in Compassion International. They serve the homeless annually.
Mt Calvary Baptist Church’s story is one of resilience faith and unwavering commitment. It is a beacon of hope in Detroit a testament to the enduring power of community. It continues to grow and serve its community. Its history is remarkable. Its future looks bright.
