High above the surrounding flatlands stands MT. Bonghwa. This independent mountain offers more than just a climb. It whispers tales of signal fires and ancient rituals.

MT. Bonghwa rises 160.1 meters. It sits within Sangbong-dong, Junghwa-dong, Muk-dong and Sinnae-dong. This location gives stunning views in almost every direction.

From MT. Bonghwa, one can see Buramsan Mountain. Dobongsan Mountain stretches to the north. Even the Yangju area becomes visible on clear days. Namsan Mountain and the southern regions present themselves without the obstruction of taller peaks.

Once known as “Bongujae,” MT. Bonghwa officially became part of Seoul in 1963. Before that, it belonged to Gyeonggi-do Province. Its name connects it to the Bonghwa region.

Long ago, MT. Bonghwa served as a vital communication point. The beacon tower of Achasan Bongsudae now stands remodeled since 1994. It links to the northern Hanisan Mountain. These beacon towers relayed important messages across the land.

Today, MT. Bonghwa is a neighborhood park called Bonghwa Park. It provides five kilometers of walking trails. Designated as such in July 1977, it is a place for recreation.

Pine trees thrive here on MT. Bonghwa. Meokgol pear trees also grow at the mountain’s base. These pear trees slowly spread to the nearby areas.

Near MT. Bonghwa’s summit sits Sasingak Shrine. Shamanistic rituals took place here four centuries ago. The current brick-red and cement structure is a restoration. The original was tragically destroyed in a fire in 1992.

Annually, the Bonghwasan Dodanggut takes place close by. This shamanistic rite occurs on the third day of the third lunar month. It is considered an Intangible Cultural Property of Seoul.

Imagine the signal fires blazing atop MT. Bonghwa. They quickly spread news across the valleys. Picture the shamanistic rituals at Sasingak Shrine. These are only glimpses into MT. Bonghwa’s rich past.

Take a moment to appreciate the views from MT. Bonghwa. Consider its history as a beacon of communication. Remember the traditions that still echo on its slopes. MT. Bonghwa connects us to both nature and Seoul’s vibrant heritage.
