Imagine dancing in the belly of a reefer cargo ship. This is the MS Stubnitz, a unique venue here in Hamburg. It’s more than just a ship. It’s a floating industrial monument and a testament to alternative culture.

MS Stubnitz began its life in 1964. It was built in Stralsund for the GDR’s deep-sea fishing fleet. The ship, along with its sister ship the KTS Granitz, served VEB Fischfang Sassnitz. Later, from 1984, it became part of the Rostock deep-sea fishing fleet. Its primary role was temporary storage and transferring frozen cargo to larger vessels. MS Stubnitz even operated near Spitzbergen and Mozambique. It could store and pack around 60 tons of fish daily.

After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the Rostock fish combine restructured. MS Stubnitz, one of the fleet’s oldest ships, was sold. An artists’ initiative saw an opportunity. They envisioned transforming the refrigerated ship. It would become a mobile platform. This platform would host music, art, and culture.

In 2000, MS Stubnitz regained its license. It could once again carry international cargo. This allowed it to visit ports across the North and Baltic Seas. The MS Stubnitz became a popular venue. It hosted music and cultural festivals in cities like Riga and Amsterdam.

But it’s not just a party boat. MS Stubnitz is a historical artifact. It’s one of the last surviving 80-meter fishing vessels from the GDR. Much of the original ship remains intact. The electro-mechanical engine system, the bridge, and even the ship’s hospital are largely untouched. This authenticity earned it monument status in 2003.

Step inside the MS Stubnitz and you will see the transformation. Three former cargo holds now serve as event spaces. Live music, exhibitions, and performances fill these areas. Artists can stay and work onboard. The ship acts as a hub for creativity.

Urs Blaser is a key figure in the MS Stubnitz story. Back in 1992, he initiated the project. He is a qualified seaman. He can oversee the ship’s engine watch. Blaser and his team have faced many challenges over the years. Yet, they continue to maintain this unique space.

The MS Stubnitz relies on volunteers, companies, and private donors. It also gets project funding from the city.

The MS Stubnitz has faced noise complaints in recent years. In spite of that, it remains moored at Hamburg’s Elbbrücken since September 2023.

The MS Stubnitz received the German Venue Award in 2013. It also won the Applaus Music Prize several times. These awards recognize its outstanding live music programs.

As you explore the MS Stubnitz, remember its past. It sailed the high seas as a fishing vessel. Today, it sails the seas of culture. It is carrying music and art to new audiences. This ship is a testament to Hamburg’s vibrant spirit. It preserves history while creating new stories.
