Did you know the Mousonturm was once Frankfurt’s first skyscraper? Towering over the Ostend district this nine-story building was quite impressive in 1924. It wasn’t always a cultural center though. The Mousonturm stands proudly before us a testament to Frankfurt’s history.
For years the Mousonturm housed J G Mouson & Co a perfume and soap factory. The company had humble beginnings in 1798. It started as a small soap factory. It expanded significantly over time. By 1864 it even boasted its own retail store. However the original location became too small. The company relocated to the Ostend district.
Fritz Mouson grandson of the founder spearheaded the construction of the Mousonturm. He traveled extensively to learn the latest production methods. He implemented assembly line production. The Mousonturm’s innovative design was the culmination of his ambition and forward-thinking approach. It was designed by Fritz Mouson himself along with architects Robert Wollmann and Josef Geitner. The expressionist style building with its clinker brick facade became a landmark.
The Mousonturm and a seven-story annex survived World War II relatively unscathed. Other parts of the factory complex were unfortunately destroyed. The tower itself however stood tall. It is now a protected landmark. In 1988 it was transformed into the Mousonturm House of Artists. This is a renowned cultural center.
Today the Mousonturm pulsates with creativity. It hosts diverse artistic performances. These include theater dance music performance art film readings and more. It is a testament to Frankfurt’s vibrant arts scene. It also provides studios rehearsal spaces and workshops for artists. It is a platform for innovation and a space where art comes alive.
