Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stand on a mountain named after fire? Here at Mountain of Fire, or Hỏa Sơn as it’s known in Vietnamese, we’re about to find out.

Mountain of Fire is one of the five Marble Mountains. These mountains rise dramatically from the plains near Da Nang. They are named after the five elements. Those elements are Kim which means metal, Thủy which means water, Mộc which means wood, Hỏa which of course means fire, and Thổ which means earth.

Legend says a dragon emerged from the East Vietnam Sea. It laid an egg on the beach. After a thousand days, a girl hatched. The broken shell pieces became the Marble Mountains. What happened to the girl remains a mystery.

The Vietnamese name for the cluster of mountains is Ngũ Hành Sơn. It translates to “five elements mountains”. This name reflects ancient Asian philosophy. It suggests everything in nature is made of these elements.

For centuries, these mountains have held significance. The Cham people revered them as spiritual sites. Emperors and generals visited, adding to their legends.

Imagine soldiers during the Vietnam War. They were so sure of American ignorance. They hid a hospital in plain sight within the Marble Mountains.

Today, the Marble Mountains are famous. They attract tourists and pilgrims alike. Buddhist pagodas top the craggy peaks. Tunnels and caves riddle the mountains. Ancient temples and shrines fill alcoves. Some are over 300 years old.

Stone carving is a local tradition. Non Nuoc Village lies at the foot of the mountains. Craftsmen create sculptures. The marble now comes from other provinces. This protects the precious mountains from destruction.

Thủy Sơn, or Water Mountain, is the only one accessible to visitors. A stairway leads to the summit. From there, enjoy panoramic views. Grottoes like Huyen Khong and Tang Chon dot the landscape. You will find Hindu and Buddhist sanctuaries. Look for the temples of Tam Thai, Tu Tam, and Linh Ung. Don’t miss the Pho Dong pagoda. Statues and reliefs depict religious scenes. They are carved into the marble.

The largest cave is Huyen Khong. Light shafts pierce the dark cavern. It once served as a secret base. Later, it was a field hospital. The cave houses a massive stone Buddha. Shrines are dedicated to matchmaking gods.

Hoa Nghiem Cave on Water Mountain has a 400-year-old Lady Buddha statue. Tang Chon Cave on Metal Mountain features marble chess players. You will also see mandarin statues.

Linh Ung Pagoda has a detailed archway facing Non Nuoc Beach. Nguyen Emperor Gia Long ordered its construction in 1825. The motifs resemble those in Hue’s UNESCO-listed tombs. Xa Loi Tower is nearby. This structure houses 200 Buddha statues. It provides breathtaking views.

Tam Thai Pagoda is on Water Mountain. It is dedicated to the bodhisattva Phat Di Lac. King Ming Mang rebuilt it over 400 years ago.

As you explore Mountain of Fire and the other Marble Mountains, consider the elements. Think about fire’s power and beauty. Reflect on the history and legends. The Marble Mountains offer a unique blend of nature, religion, and culture. They are a testament to Vietnam’s rich heritage.
