A weathered stone tablet stands before us. Its ancient calligraphy whispers tales of emperors and deities. Welcome to the Mountain God Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s a living testament to Beijing’s rich history. It’s a place where Taoist traditions echo through centuries.

The Mountain God Temple originally opened in 1319. Zhang Liusun a Yuan dynasty official started its construction. He dedicated it to the Great Deity of the Eastern Peak. Sadly he died before its completion. His disciple Wu Quanjie finished the work in 1322. The main halls and the main gate were completed then.

The Mountain God Temple wasn’t always so grand. It faced hardship during the Cultural Revolution. The insides were completely destroyed. Many priceless artifacts vanished. However the temple reopened in the late 1970s. Most of its statues are replicas. Five original statues came from the Beijing Sanguanmiao temple.

But the Mountain God Temple persevered. It served as a school and government offices. It even housed hundreds of people. In 1996 it finally gained recognition as a national treasure. Extensive restoration work followed. The temple was fully restored in 2002. This cost 5.8 million yuan.

Today the Mountain God Temple stands proud. It boasts three courtyards and 376 rooms. It covers 4.7 hectares. Imagine the stories held within its walls. Look at the courtyards. They hold a precious collection of stone tablets. Some date back to the Yuan Ming and Qing dynasties.

One tablet stands out. It features calligraphy by Zhao Mengfu. A famous Yuan dynasty calligrapher. The inscription details the life of Zhang Liusun the temple’s founder. It contains 2786 characters. It is the last piece of a set of four tablets.

The Mountain God Temple is more than just stones and statues. It’s a living link to the past. A place where history breathes. Feel the weight of centuries as you walk these grounds. Let the stories of emperors and deities fill your mind. The Mountain God Temple’s story continues. Let us be part of its next chapter.
